Not Fond of House Lizards? Here's How You Can Keep Them Out

When you build the house of your dreams, you certainly do not envision it to be frequented by trespassers, least of all house lizards. In most Indian households, the mention of the term “lizard” is enough to send chills down their spines. Just the sight or sound of them is capable of triggering a series of horror-stricken reactions. Although the average household lizard isn’t directly harmful or poisonous, they’re pests nonetheless and not something you should have to ideally tolerate in a neat and clean home.

Why Do You Need A Pest Control Service?

Building the house of your dreams takes years and years of hard work, patience, and savings. Given the kind of time and resources that get invested in a passion project of this magnitude, the last thing that one would want is for their dream house to be infested by ungainly pests and termites.

Getting your house invaded by an army of unwanted parasites is nothing short of a living nightmare. To avoid any scope of large-scale damage and long-term consequences, it is important that owners attend to matters like these at the earliest and not shy away from taking professional help.

While erecting your house may seem like the last link in the chain, it is actually the job half done. The other half lies in taking care of it. The latter is a complicated affair and includes a host of different activities and preventive measures. Employing termite pest control services is one such measure.

Though it may appear trivial and relatively harmless at the outset, if left unattended to, a pest infestation is well capable of spelling utter doom and horror for your house. However, a lack of awareness in this department results in many owners missing the very first signs of a pest and termite infestation at their place.

In this article, we discuss various methods using which you can keep house lizards from infesting your abode. Most of these are home remedies that will let you keep them at bay without having to kill them.

Make A Pepper Spray

Pepper water is a tried and tested technique of getting rid of lizards and ensuring that they never return to your house again. And making this mix is as easy as it gets. All you need to do is mix some black pepper powder in water. Once the solution is ready, spray it on those areas and corners of your house where you most frequently encounter these pests. It is said that pepper irritates lizards due to an ensuing allergic reaction, which makes them stay away from the spots that have been sprayed with it. If you’re out of pepper, don’t worry.Tabasco sauce, chilli flakes and red chilli powder work just as well.

Place Onion or Garlic in Frequented Corners

Onion and garlic work in the same fashion that pepper or any of its aforementioned alternatives work, by assaulting the lizard’s senses. Garlic and onion give off a pungent odour that deter the lizards from occupying a corner or returning to it. Place cloves of raw garlic and half a dozen onion slices in various corners of your house and see them work their charm. The pungent smell might be a little overpowering for you at first, but eventually, you’ll get used to it. However, it will always be strong enough to repel the lizards. If you are not in favour of leaving the pieces lying around your house, then you can always add it into a spray bottle with water to use as a handy repellent.

Air Out Cabinets Regularly

Nothing attracts house lizards more than moist and damp places. Hence, make sure that you actively air out your cabinets from time to time. The cabinets that face the highest risk of a house lizard infestation are the ones that are under your kitchen sink. So, ensure they’re kept as dry and clean as possible at all times. If you have a leaky pipe, consider fixing it at the earliest. Otherwise it will act as a watering hole for the lizards and further contribute to the damp atmosphere. Therefore, cleaning and airing your cabinets on a regular basis can go a long way towards preventing lizards from setting camp inside your home and laying eggs.

Use Naphthalene Balls

Another highly effective method of dealing with a lizard infestation is using naphthalene balls. However, if your house has toddlers and pets, make sure you’re extremely careful with them. Ensure that the naphthalene balls are comfortably out of the reach of your children and pets alike. As was the case with using onion or garlic, here also you might find the pungent odour of the naphthalene balls overwhelming at first, but overtime you’ll certainly get used to it. Lizards, on the other hand, will never be able to tolerate this smell. Consider keeping them in closets, kitchen drawers, under-sink cabinets and shelves, so you have all your bases covered. Just make sure they’re placed well away from food and water sources.
